In 2026, AEDC launched a new program focused on identifying and advancing the redevelopment of brownfield sites across its 14-county region. The initiative was made possible through a Brownfields Assessment Grant awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA).
The U.S. EPA defines brownfields as “real property, the expansion, development or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.” Identifying and understanding these potential environmental concerns is an important first step toward cleanup and redevelopment, transforming underutilized properties into productive community assets.
Through this program, AEDC is working alongside its Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP), HRP Associates, to support communities through the brownfields assessment and revitalization process. Activities include site inventory and characterization, environmental assessments, cleanup planning, and community engagement.

AEDC is actively working with communities throughout the region to identify potential sites for consideration and welcomes input from municipalities, property owners, developers, and other community stakeholders.
